Having a bad skin day? Me too!
We can't help it - stress shows up in our skin... Having been in pretty great skin shape for several months, it happened yesterday - I got a huge honking zit/pimple/big ugly thing that looks like a 3rd eye. So, what did I do?
Of course, I popped it. Bad me - rather than treating it, I got aggressive with it.
So now I'm stuck with the remnants for 3 days or so. And I feel like the world has ended. I can't cover it because I disturbed it so much. So here I sit as a middle aged woman with a welt of a 3rd eye.
Here's my advice for you who are smarter than me:
Don't disturb the outbreak
Treat it gently with something that will make it go away
Cleanse appropriately, especially when you are stressed
Find the right regimen for your skin type
Stick to the regimen diligently
And contact me for the best skin of your life, where even those of us who are there have an occasional relapse...

Careful in the West
Record heat throughout the West these days - I'm sure taking care because my personal comfort zone expires above 78 degrees. Hydrate before you go out of doors, and take cool water with you. I have a bottle of water sitting in my freezer awaiting my leaving the house.
If you're going to be in the pool and/or in the sun for more than 30 minutes, another application of sunscreen is a good idea.
I'm heading to a couple of stores to take advantage of the indoor activities, knowing that I have an outdoor one later in the heat of the late afternoon. It has been planned so that the height of the heat should be past tense by then.
Think cool - be cool - hydrate.

Summer Solstice and skin care
This longest day of the year over the next 24 hours can be a good time to check yourself out -
are you where you want to be in ways great and small? Since it is almost the half-way point of year, it's a good time to re-assess financial and employment goals.
It's also a good time to look at the impact of lifestyle and choices on our health. So taking a look at what we do for food choices, exercise alternatives, and skin care should be on our radar too. I'm looking at things like intellectual stimulation, reading, and learning new skills as high on my list as well. I have a digital media project that I've put off several times that I need to get moving on - I'm convinced it will improve my life, save me money and time, and it has been incomplete for 4 months.
What has not been incomplete is my my skin care regimen. And when my skin has that youthful glow and people ask me what I'm doing to look so good, I have confidence that I'm treating my skin very well. So take a look at your regimen on this longest day of the year:
Has your skin begun to tolerate the treatment, and not have as much effect as it did?
Have those little discolorations begun to grow?
Are you noticing more lines and wrinkles?
Are your little breakouts occurring more often or in new places?
Are you noticing more sun damaged areas because you are getting more new exposure?
Do you have dry places that just don't respond to moisturizing?
These are signs that your skin, the largest organ in your body, needs help.
Send me an email at debandonly@comcast.net if I can help you at summer solstice with your skin.

Organic or Not - part tres
We all want to use the safest, most natural products we can here in California - it's not just what we eat, it's what we use in our lives. We know our farmers, and in some cases the people that keep the chickens who lay our eggs. That's a wonderful feeling - to know the folks who are growing the food we eat and the products we use.
We don't buy vitamins or pharmaceuticals or nutraceuticals made in China because of the risk of adulteration.
But when it comes to skincare, all natural doesn't always work. That's why I'm using the products from the creators of ProActiv - Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields. No the products are not ALL natural or organic, but they are as scent-free as one can imagine, and the ingredients are tested for clinical effects. And the products do have a lot of natural ingredients.
So here is the message from the wonderful doctors who are changing skin and changing lives:

How sensitive are you?
Some of us tend to think our skin isn't that sensitive, and we regularly abuse it by not wearing sunscreen all of the time, not drinking enough water, and generally ignoring our skin's need for cleaning and moisturizing and treating other ongoing conditions.
But when you start using a new product or product set, you may find that you are more sensitive than expected. If you have redness as a result of a cleanser it could be caused by:
Something in the cleanser you're allergic or sensitive to
The way you're using the product such as scrubbing too hard or applying or removing it in too rough a way
Using it with water that can be an irritant
Not following it with an appropriate moisture replacement
I have found that I'm using very little water on my face these days. I'm using a very mild cleanser and taking it off with a very fine, hospital-grade gauze pad. This seems to work for me in minimizing any skin sensitivity issues for my akin, which I know is ultra-sensitive after years of rosacea irritation. While my rosacea is well managed at last, I still have to contend with sensitive skin issues all of the time so I don't lapse back into redness and severe outbreaks.

Out and About Two
I've started keeping a bottle of sunscreen in my car console - what a good idea is that in California and other places where we have sunshine most of the year! It makes it easy to reapply through the day, and if it's easy, we do it. If it's not easy, we usually don't. So much for the discipline of our routines...
We all like to have maximum benefits with minimum effort, and that's possible if you follow a great regimen.
Like getting enough sleep, drinking enough water, and using sunscreen all of the time.
Water, water, water - everywhere

Organic or Not part deux
Here's a short video from Doctors Rodan and Fields on the subject of organic ingredients for skin care. While all of us want to avoid putting ourselves at risk of harmful chemicals, we also want skin care that is effective. Especially for us aging baby boomers who want to regain or retain that youthful glow.
I love the glow that I've gotten back from the Rodan + Fields products. My face doesn't look 19 again, but I'm a pretty terrific example of Aging Redefined! And I do look significantly younger than the chronological age... and part of that is a response to the regimens I have been using. No these are not ALL natural products, but they are as scent-free as one can imagine, and the ingredients are tested for clinical effects.
So here is the message from the wonderful doctors who are changing skin and changing lives:

Sunscreen Every Day 2
As we go from winter into spring, it just feels great to get out into the sun. The days are longer, and it is light longer and our tendency is to go out with fewer layers of clothing on. And to forget the sunscreen...
But you really can't forget it, even when the weather isn't hot yet. We need to make daily sunscreen a part of our daily repertoire. Every day, without fail. It's too easy, especially for us older chicks, to get a burn without realizing it. And to do damage that overcomes all of those other good things we do for our skin and our health generally.
So lather on the sunscreen, in the morning. Find one with SPF30 that doesn't irritate your skin. Find one that has a scent you like or better still no scent at all. And use it. Daily. Regularly. Think of it as an essential, like a daily vitamin. And your skin will love you for preventing future damage from happening. Skin is our largest organ - take care of it, and it will take care of you.

Rosacea Cure?
A business contact was telling me today about something that some positive effect on her rosacea (that she has been treating for 25+ years). No, it wasn't the fractal laser treatment that so many dermatologists recommend. No, it wasn't the antibiotic treatment that doctors often think will help but have so many side effects that it isn't worthwhile. No, it's not the topical antibiotic gel that is commonly used, or the other over the counter non-prescription products available.
The product that has some positive effect on her rosacea was Nerium, a new serum developed from the oleander plant. Apparently it didn't do much for the aging skin and wrinkles but did have a calming effect on the blush and redness.
Since the medical community doesn't agree on what causes rosacea, it's hard to find a cure. But I have found significant relief from my rosacea with Rodan + Fields "Soothe" regimen. My rosacea is cleared up to the point that people don't know I have rosacea - how cool is that!

Regularity is the key
Great skin can happen overnight, with a serum that really works for your skin and issues while you sleep. But the biggest gains happen over time using a consistent regimen of cleansing, toning, moisturizing, and preventing future damage with appropriate sunscreen.
Why is all of this important? It's important because each element of the process plays a slightly different chemical role in the support of existing cells and the replenishment of new cells. The skin is our largest organ in our body, so we need to treat it well. And also support it by drinking enough water and getting enough sleep so that resources are replenished to the skin.
I say love the skin you are in - don't hit it with a poison or cut it up and reshape it artificially with plastic surgery or other procedures. Treat it well and the results will show up daily.

Sunscreen every day
Is it cloudy and cold where you are? Remember the sunscreen. Is it raining in your neighborhood? Remember the sunscreen.
All of us baby boomers grew up tanning, and taking steps to make the tanning quicker by using things that were awful for our skin. Especially now, as the effects of all of that early tanning come out as our skin ages.
But using sunscreen ALL of the time, regardless of the weather or time of the year, is critical for us boomers.
SPF 30 is enough for most of us. And a sunscreen that doesn't cause other issues like breakouts or irritation is also essential. I've got the perfect solution for this and other skin issues.

I also had the wrong idea about soft
I had thought that my lips were as soft as they always had been - didn't think I had a problem there. But a new lip serum product improved the softness and texture of my older lips IN ONE APPLICATION. I've seen a lot of commercials lately saying that women don't want to wait for skin care results these days. And I'm no different than a lot of them... but I was amazed at the immediate improvement here.
If you want this kind of result for your baby boomer skin issues, drop an email to debandonly@comcast.net and I'll share info with you.

I had the wrong idea about clean 2
Remember squeaky clean? That was the feeling we used to go for, right? That seabreeze, bright clean that was shiny and filled with alcohol or other drying agents?
The clean feeling we need now with our aging skin is a light and moist feeling - clean without being parched or clogged. Hard to find the balance there.
But we didn't realize how much damage the astringent, toner or scrubbing might be doing which shows up 20 years later. That and the unrealized sun damage are the things we're paying for now. So make sure that your cleaning regime is not creating more unanticipated problems for you - go for a new regimen that includes an appropriate cleanser, a toner, a moisturizer, and then always sunscreen.
Let me know if I can help you find the right blend for your skin.

I had the wrong idea about clean
I was always a soap and water girl, to cleanse my face. I can't imagine it now, but growing up that meant Dial and hot water at home. When I went out on my own, I migrated to Ivory (even before I was offered a job at P&G) and still used warmer water.
What I've learned over the years is:
One cannot use a mask even an herbal one on sensitive skin
Warm or hot water is not helpful in cleansing
Apricot and other natural scrubs may be fine for some people but not me
Washing with water can be drying to older skin
Clean doesn't mean stripping the oils out of your skin
So now with all of this hard-earned and red-faced learning, what am I doing?
I'm cleansing without water with a very mild cleanser, followed by a toner, a moisturizer, and a sunscreen.
Religiously. And my skin looks great, for any age.

We're changing
Isn't that what social media is all about? Thinking about how to reach people, and to get feedback about what's working and what's not. I started this blog with the idea that it would be a way to reach people, and then realized that I had turned it into an advertisement.
And although I have a point of view on skin care, I don't want this forum to be an advert.
So stick with me, if you are and reading. And let me know what you'd like to know. I've learned a lot about skin care for us baby boomers, and would like to interact with a wider community on this topic.

Yesterday's observation
So I did a small skin test using the MacroExfoliator on my sensitive skin the other day. Yesterday, I had an interesting observation. I was driving and had on very good polarized sunglasses. My rear view mirror is also polarized. Looking at my forehead (one of the areas tested with the MacroE), I could see the line of where I had used the tool, and where the skin was untouched. It was pretty amazing - the 2 inch section that I had exfoliated was lighter and more even toned and had almost no wrinkles (pretty amazing for this age). The section that had not been exfoliated was more uneven in tone, and had some small dark spots and sun damage that is not visible to the normal naked eye.

I got carded :^)
Somebody actually asked to see my driver's license yesterday. What a hoot! If this isn't "aging redefined", I don't know what is. People tell me I look great for my age. I think I look great for any age, particularly the one I'm in. As I approach a birthday (dear readers you don't need to know :^), this gets to be ever more important to me.
I didn't always have great skin. I did as a youngster and a teenager. And then as a young adult, I had bouts of acne. After that disappeared, I got rosacea. The unfairness of it all - to have age-related things happening to you skin, and then have all of the treatments for those things causing other issues. It's a wonder we women do not lose our minds over these things.
That's why I'm so high on the regimens from Rodan + Fields.
Let me know if I can help you redefine your age regarding your skin.

MacroExfoliator test on sensitive skin
Rodan + Fields new MacroE tool for once a week exfoliation is not intended for use on sensitive skin like mine. But with the wisdom of the doctors and Nurse Mary behind me, I gave it a brief test.
I tried it on the top of my forehead and on a place along my jawline - neither of these spots have been affected by rosacea as far as I know. So, I carefully followed the directions and used the tool at low power 3 in manual mode for about 30 seconds on each area. I followed with the cooling gel.
My results? A bit of redness on the jawline, and none on the forehead. The skin sensations today?
Better texture and smoothness on both areas, and no swelling or redness. It doesn't look like inflamed skin, which is often what you see after someone has had an exfoliation.
So, I will try it again next week. Remember this is a once a week usage for all skin types.

Drank red wine without a blush
Last night, I had 2 triggers and no blush. Ate some spicy wonderful food at a restaurant in The City, drank some excellent sangria, and neither caused a rosacea blush. That tells me that the Rodan + Fields Soothe line is really working for me. This morning, my skin is as even toned as it was before rosacea - the regimen is terrific, and this just shows me that I need to follow it (cleanse, treat, moisturize, protect from sun).
Skin, it's a beautiful thing!

The beauty of Rodan + Fields
The real beauty of the products developed by our marvelous doctors is that there is something for everyone. The regimens are different, and you can mix and match products from another regimen. For example, I use the Soothe line because I have sensitive skin and rosacea. Now that my rosacea is under control, I've added in occasional use of the Redefine line to improve some of the aging skins issues ( a sag here, a wrinkle there, some texture issues in another area). And using Nurse Mary as my guide, I'm seeing results on those things as well.
Skin - it's a beautiful thing. And I want everyone to have the best skin they can. Which is why I became a Rodan + Fields consultant. So drop me a note at debandonly@comcast.net for more information.

What are you putting up with?
I used to think that I had to put up with my skin issues forever. You know, work around them, cover them up, treat them with something that was sure to cause some other issue (dryness, peeling, more redness, outbreaks of some kind or other).
Haven't we all been there?
I'm not putting up with rosacea these days - I am loving the skin that I am in. The "blush" from rosacea is nearly gone. I still see one line of small vessels on one side of my face, when I look in the 10x mirror. Otherwise, it's not visible. That's the great news. And it could be for you too.
So check out my website to see what Rodan + Fields has for you. It could be the beginning of the end of your putting up with your skin issues.

Love my new pics
Because of Rodan and Fields... I'm the new poster child for loving the skin that I'm in!

Enhancements
I always believed the Bare Escentials/Bare Minerals line that their make up is good for your skin. I had used their products for a number of years, and was happy with the light coverage and not needing to use another foundation type product as my skin ages (just hate the look of dryness and lines that most foundations give to aging skin).
If you feel that way, take a quick look at Rodan + Fields "Enhancements" product - it is sheer weightless mineral peptides (patented medicine by R+F's doctors) that provide a wonderful enhancement to your great skin care of Rodan + Fields. It's amazing - I just put a swipe or two on to give myself a lift. Just the feel of the soft brush is soothing even. And that tiny bit of coverage that I need.
Remember that all of the Rodan and Fields regimens include a great sunscreen to prevent further damage to your skin. Wear it every day - and remember your neck!
Enhancement is part of the package here, in the AntiAging Assault package:

People are Talking
I may not be getting any comments on this blog, but it is clear that people are talking about the improvements in my skin. I had lunch with colleagues this week, and one asked me about what I'm doing. That is clearly the best advertising for Rodan + Fields' products ever...
I use the Soothe regimen to control and abate the appearance of rosacea, and also use some of the other products. The AntiAging eye make up remover pads have the mineral peptides in them, and are the gentlest best product of this type I've ever used.
The Enhancements mineral peptides (foundation) is so light, and the brush is soft - it's like not wearing anything on your skin, except that the look is perfect. I feel like I have nothing to hide. No crepey look like with the other mineral powder foundation.

Winter skin care
We all need to be as careful with our skin in the winter as we are year round. It's easy to think that you don't need sunscreen because there is so little sun exposure in many parts of the country in the winter.
I've seen great benefit to using Rodan + Fields sunscreen every day. The point is to prevent new sun damaging effects while you're reversing the aging process on your biggest organ - your skin.
I always tended to think of sunscreen as a spring/summer need. But now Doctors Rodan and Fields have taught me the power of using sunscreen year round as a preventative tool. And their sunscreen matched to the regimens is fabulous... I use the Soothe line, and the sunscreen is terrific. No smell, no goopy after effects, and it doesn't sweat off (although we have less of that going on this time of year).
